Completion of its conversion project in ChinaIn June 2008, BNP Paribas announced the completion of its conversion project in China, a prerequisite for the Bank to gradually conduct banking services freely with all classes of customers in China. The conversion also represents a significant landmark of the Bank since it established its presence in the country nearly 150 years ago. In April, BNP Paribas secured the approval from China's banking regulator, the China Banking Regulatory Commission, to convert the branches of BNP Paribas in Beijing, Tianjin and Guangzhou into branches of BNP Paribas (China) Limited, a wholly owned existing subsidiary of the Bank. BNP Paribas Shanghai branch will be retained as a foreign currency wholesale branch under the BNP Paribas Group.
Partnership with Bank of NanjingBNP Paribas has partnered with Bank of Nanjing (BoN) to give it a foothold on the mainland. BNP Paribas' partner is one of China's biggest commercial banks located in Jiangsu province, with the number of branches totaling 60 and employing more than 1,500 people. The deal was completed in October 2005. Under the terms of the agreement, BNP Paribas purchased a 19.2 percent stake in the Chinese bank, which has been diluted to 12.6 per cent stake following Bank of Nanjing's initial public offering in July 2007. The partnership with BoN includes a range of business activities, building on BoN's knowledge and distribution strength of the local market, and BNP Paribas' product skills in areas including retail banking, credit cards, wealth management and corporate banking.
